Closure of PLO's office in Washington and jungle law

21 September, 18

Esam Shawer

The U.S. administration had announced the closure of the Palestinian Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Office in Washington on the pretext of U.S.’ concern over the Palestinian efforts to prompt the International Criminal Court (ICC) to carry out an investigation into crimes committed by the Israeli Occupation.

The United States (U.S.) will always stand with its friend and ally, the Israeli Occupation, Bolton said in a speech to the Federalist Society in Washington.

In 2015, the U.S. Congress had passed a law stating that it would shut down the Palestinian Liberation Organization’s office in Washington if it approached the ICC to prosecute the Israeli leaders for atrocities they had perpetrated against the Palestinian people.

Due to the endorsement of that law and the current U.S. administration’s violations against the Palestinians and the PA, the PLO should realize that the Oslo Accords would never bring about an honorable solution. Rather, the Israeli Occupation has been gaining ‘field accomplishments’ that it would never abandon through political pressure. On the contrary, the achievements of the PLO might be lost in a blink of an eye, exactly as what happed when its office was closed in Washington.

The PA has not approached the ICC officially yet, but The U.S. decision was made because the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, called on the ICC to take actions against the Israeli Occupation in his speech at the UN. This indicates that it is impossible for the PLO to manipulate the ICC in its struggle with the Israeli Occupation. Moreover, the U.S. threatened it would enforce some measures against ICC in case it responded to the Palestinian calls.

In turn, this is a proof that running behind international legitimacy is just an illusion and hurrying to join international organizations to collect recognitions of the Palestinians’ right in one fourth of their homeland is mere dreams crushed by the U.S.’ bullying. At this point, we work out, or the PLO does, that this world is governed by “the jungle law”.

As the Palestinian people believe that all of them are targeted, the Palestinian people stand united against the U.S.’ crimes: against the U.S.’ recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli occupation’s capital, against the endeavors to end the issue of the Palestinian refugees, and against the closure of the PLO’s office in Washington.

In the end, we, as Palestinians, can together settle our internal issues, but PLO should stand with the Palestinian people to let them stand with it. They should join all the resistances factions, first of all, Hamas. In other words, the PLO should comprehend that our unity is the path to support the Palestinian issue and liberate Palestinian. They should not be deluded by other illusions.
