Ibrahimi Mosque massacre: Illustrating the Zionist tradition of murder

25 February, 16

On this day of February 1994, US-born doctor Baruch Goldstein, 38, burst into the holy Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron, spraying worshippers with bullets and grenades as they gathered to perform Fajr (morning) prayers.

Seeking to gun down as much Palestinians as possible, Goldstein chose the last Friday in the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan to carry out his mass murder. His calculations that the mosque would be packed did not fail; over 800 hundred worshippers attended on that particular day.

Goldstein picked the moment when prayers kneeled down for Sujud to spray the crowd with hundreds of bullets from his army-issued Galil rifle. According to witnesses and coroner reports, grenades were used in the attack, too.

Defenseless worshippers were trapped. By the moment Goldstein had nearly run out of ammunition, over 30 Muslims were martyred, and over 100 wounded. Goldstein was caught in the retreat and beaten. He was later found dead.

Protests erupted all over Palestine, and thousands gathered at the Ahli Hospital in Hebron, waiting to hear for news of relatives who were in the mosque at the time of the massacre.

Occupation soldiers fired at Palestinian protesters who took to the streets in the aftermath of the massacre, elevating the toll of martyrs to near 60.

Hate-blinded colonizer

In pursuit of fulfilling supremacist beliefs and the thrill to kill, Baruch Goldstein emigrated from his previous residence in Brooklyn, New York to live in the Jewish settlement of Kiryat Arba and serve in the Israeli occupation forces.

A Zionist extremist and illegal squatter, he was active in the terrorist Kach party. He refused to treat Arabs, even those who carried Israeli passports, believing it was against Jewish laws.

Goldstein’s superiority beliefs reached a pinnacle 22 years ago when he carried out his horrible massacre.

Hate-blinded society

Goldstein’s act was widely praised by the Israeli society. He was regarded as a national hero, while many regretted that he "did not kill enough".

Today, his grave, which overlooks the city where he committed his mass murder, remains a place of pilgrimage and celebration by those who embrace his Zionist ideology.

The Hebrew inscription on Goldstein’s grave monument reads:

“The revered Dr. Baruch Kapel Goldstein… Son of Israel.  He gave his soul for the sake of the people of Israel, The Torah, and the Land.  His hands are clean and his heart good… He was assassinated for the Sanctity of God.”

Until today, colonial Zionist terrorism continues to exact a heavy price, supported by uninterrupted arms supply and political support from many governments.

The burning alive of 18-month-old Ali Dawabsheh and his parents in the Palestinian village of Duma is but one striking example of settler barbarity, and, like Goldstein’s mass murder, the crime was applauded, celebrated and danced upon.
