The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas rejected the decision of Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas to form a constitutional court.
In a press statement on Monday, Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri dismissed the step as an illegal and unilateral action.
"This step reflects Abbas's disregard for national consensus and his monopoly over national decisions." He underlined.
Abu Zuhri said that after his term expired, Mahmoud Abbas remained as head of the Palestinian Authority by national consensus, hence all major decisions, including the formation of a constitutional court, must also rely on common consent.
He noted that most members of the court are also Fatah cadres, which contradicts with the rules of judicial independence.
