International Women’s Day: Israeli occupation detains 43 Palestinian women

08 March, 20

Israeli occupation forces have detained more than 16,000 Palestinian women since 1967, Head of Research and Documentation Unit Abdulnaser Ferwana said.

In a press statement on International Women’s Day, which marks 8 March, the group explained that the Israeli occupation is holding 43 Palestinian women in harsh conditions.

Israeli arrests are an attempt to intimidate Palestinian women and affect their role in their society, the group explained, noting that sometimes Israeli occupation troops detain women to pressure their relatives or family members to provide information.

Female Palestinian detainees are subjected to severe forms of interrogation, physical and psychological torture, and suppression with no regard to their gender and privacy, in addition to denying them access to health care, the rights group added.

All women who have been subjected to detention faced one form or more of physical or psychological torture and ill-treatment, the rights group continued.

Over the past year, Israeli occupation troops detained 128 Palestinian women, including mothers and minors, whereas 29 others were arrested since the start of this year.

The Israeli occupation is still holding nearly 43 Palestinian ladies, including 16 mothers, 27 of them are serving different jail sentences and four others are held under administrative detention.

Amal Taqatqa, detained on December 1,2014 and serves a seven-year jail sentence, is the oldest female Palestinian prisoner held in Israeli prisoners, according to the human rights group.

Hanaa Shalbi, the group continued, had gone on a 44-day hunger strike, the longest of its kind being staged by a female Palestinian detainee, before being banished to Gaza on April 1, 2012.

Jordanian citizen Hiba al-Labad is latest female detainee to go on a hunger strike for 42 days to protest her administrative detention in Israeli prisons before being released at the request of the Jordanian government on November 2019.

On March , the world celebrates women for their roles in various aspects of life while ignoring Palestinian women and their suffering aggravated by the Israeli occupation which denied them their rights, regretted the human rights group.

The group called on all humanitarian and rights groups advocating for women’s rights to shed light on the suffering of female Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails and seriously act to restore their freedom.
