HRW findings on Palestinian detainees in Saudi Arabia are alarming: Hamas spokesperson

19 April, 20

The testimonies and evidence obtained by Human Rights Watch (HRW) about serious violations committed by the Saudi authorities against Palestinian detainees raise concerns about their lives and safety, Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qasem said.

In a press release on Saturday evening, Qasem renewed his movement’s call on Saudi Arabia to release the Palestinians held in the Kingdom’s jails amid fears raising from COVID-19 pandemic, especially as some of them are sick and elderly.

On Friday, the international human rights group said that that the mass trial of 68 Palestinian and Jordanian nationals held in Saudi prisons “raises serious concerns about due process, amid charges of committing violations against the detainees.”

“At a time when COVID-19 presents acute dangers to prisoners, Saudi Arabia should consider alternatives to detention, particularly for those in pretrial detention,” said Michael Page, deputy director at HRW’s Middle East and North Africa division.
