Senior Hamas officials attend funeral of prominent Islamic scholar

Head of Hamas Political Bureau Ismail Haniyeh, accompanied by a high-level delegation from the movement, attended Tuesday afternoon the funeral of renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi in the Qatari capital, Doha.

 

The Hamas delegation included Hamas chief abroad Khalid Meshal and politburo members Mousa Abu Marzouq, Khalil al-Hayya, Ezzat al-Risheq, and Husam Badran. 

Speaking at the funeral, Haniyeh said that the Arab and Muslim world has lost one of its most prominent scholars who had dedicated his life to serving the Arab and Muslim issues, particularly the Palestinian cause.    

Haniyeh extended his sincere condolences to the Qatari emir and people over the death of Sheikh al-Qaradawi. 

Meshal, meanwhile, lauded the founder of the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) for his morals and virtues, confirming that Sheikh al-Qaradawi had defended the Arab and Muslim issues throughout his life, foremost among them is the Palestinian cause. 

The Hamas chief abroad pointed to Sheikh al-Qaradawi's visit to Gaza following the 2008 Israeli aggression, during which he voiced support for the Palestinian people and resistance in the face of the Israeli occupation. 

Meshal offered his sincere condolences to Egypt, where Sheikh al-Qaradawi was born, Qatar, and the entire Arab and Muslim world.
